@inq @will is the master. Sometimes he leaves me an opening, though.

First computer 1959. Retired from my own computer company 2004.
Hardware - Expert in 1401, and 360, fairly knowledge in PC plus numerous MPU's and MCU's
Major Languages - Machine language, 360 Macro Assembler, Intel Assembler, PL/I and PL1, Pascal, Basic, C plus numerous job control and scripting languages.
Sure you can learn to be a programmer, it will take the same amount of time for me to learn to be a Doctor.

Hi Ron @zander,

re: I worked for IBM so I know exactly what they are doing there. etc etc

I never underestimate the budget organisations the size of IBM have for manufacturing spin, nor do I underestimate their willingness to use it, if they think is in their 'corporate' interest, regardless of morality or reality.

However, I do have the impression at least someone in IBM is taking AI seriously ... e.g. their website:

https://developer.ibm.com/technologies/artificial-intelligence/

I haven't examined it closely, so maybe it's all spin to deflect and confuse, and perhaps they are using an AI system to generate it. 🤨

Whether, they make a profit or loss, a massive spin or a substantial contribution, out of this operation, only time will tell. As usual with R&D, I expect 90% of it will be binned, but the 10% surviving may have a massive effect.

so presently, I think ignoring or dismissing this and other AI developments, is likely to be a mistake.

Of course, I completely accept and encourage you to disagree with me. I have no delusions of infallibility or a crystal ball.

Best wishes, Dave

You two crack me up! 🤣 🤣 🤣 Laurel and Hardy would be proud!

Great, thanks. I love being compared to dead people.

Anything seems possible when you don't know what you're talking about.

@davee I think you misunderstood me, or more likely, I was confusing you. What I am saying is IBM wants you to believe they will be USING AI for their workers, so by implication, if you want to keep up with the Joneses, you better buy our (IBM) machines to do the same. So I think we are in agreement.

To give you an idea of how IBM thinks, at least back when I was there, they hire all the top grads they can get their hands on regardless of specialty. Each is given an office that the employee outfits as he wants (fairly standard for all key IBM employees in the US) and a budget (one time, no renewal or removal) of $1,000,000 to spend as he/she sees fit. If at the end of the time frame (maybe 1 yr, or 2, memory fails me) they can demonstrate a profitable (subject to minimums) product or process they get to carry on and become employees, otherwise they are released from their contract.

Back when I was noticing, IBM had the most patents assigned yearly for quite some time. Since I left there in 81, the business model has changed several times. The entire IT function I was involved with was disbanded! I have no idea what happened to the tens of millions of lines of code we turned out over about 15 years.

EDIT I neglected to say that IBM may or may not intend to do as they said, but that is not relevant to the bottom line. Making prospects and customers believe they are is relevant to the bottom line and at IBM the bottom line is GOD.

Do you know they have something called 'Profit Day'? It is the 1st of every month and the executives sit down with a report that shows them how they are doing. When that system crashed one time and the primary programmer was away on vacation (they have used the police to find them) they called me in as I was the #2 contact for every system. I was very shocked when a guy showed up dressed like an esquire ad while I was in my grubs poring over a core dump. All he said was, 'let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you'. I did not know the then newish IBM Canada President and had to ask someone who he was. I was impressed and thought I might ask him to get me a burger and fries but decided to not be a smartass (I know, hard to believe)

For most people that might have gotten this far and are thinking... What's up!?  I needed to back-peddle because I can't power this beast for the days it might need to do the AI self training.  Besides its too big and would be a bull in the China shop inside my house.  I thus did a re-think and started a prequel bot if you will.  Once it is done, and if there is any interest, I will return to this one with the hopes that some of the early stage learning can just be transferred from InqEgg to Inqster.

3 lines of code = InqPortal = Complete IoT, App, Web Server w/ GUI Admin Client, WiFi Manager, Drag & Drop File Manager, OTA, Performance Metrics, Web Socket Comms, Easy App API, All running on ESP8266...
Even usable on ESP-01S - Quickest Start Guide
