noobs should be really small. It's just an installer with a boot file. It's like 35megs exploded

@duce-robot

Try the noobs lite and see what happens. The difference between the big one and the small one is that the small one needs internet. I tried to post it on my github, but it's 37 megs

The latest full noobs download is 2.25 GB and the raspian full image is 6.43GB.  Obviously depending on your internet speed the noobs download can still take some time.   I have not had any problem with either of the downloads not have I found any difference in copying the noobs files or flashing the raspian image to a SD card except that the size of the files has grown.  I do not see others raising any issues with this so maybe something just went wrong in your download.

As @byron states above, NOOBS is just a copy of files to a blank SD card.  Then doing an installation with that requires the PI to have a network connection, either wired or wireless, to do a install of Raspian.  That's why it is so much smaller.  The full package is much, much bigger as it is an image file of a PI that has everything installed, except for updates that became available after the image was made.  The image has to be written to the SD card with a special piece of software (Etcher or DiskImager) and not just copied with intrinsic OS commands.

I've done both of these processes multiple times over the last week or two and have had no issues.  It doesn't appear, at least to me, that the process is any different than it was with previous releases.
