Connecting a string of ws2812 lights to a Raspberry Pi3B and I'm not sure if I really need the level shifter for this
The communication is only going one way, from the Pi to the lights, so, it seems I shouldn't need one, and if I can get away without it, I'd like to avoid using it. I have a box of them, so it's not a huge deal to include it, other than having to reprint the case to include the shifter board
I see this 2 ways...
Option 1, sorta recommended-ish...
and Option B, which is without the shifter...
And then of course, there's option 0x2A, which is driving to the store to buy Christmas lights, which I totally wanna avoid
Are you using the WS2812 or WS2812B?
The WS2812 requires a 5-7 volt power supply and is used with 5-volt logic. The WS2812B requires a 3.3 to 5-volt supply and will use 3.3-volt logic, as long as it is powered by a 3.3-volt supply.
So essentially it really depends upon which ones you have.

Ok. That helps. I'm not sure how to tell the difference other than going thru my amazon orders from February, which tells me that these are the ws2812B, so, as long as I got what I ordered, I guess I'm good with no reprinting of the case 😋
I will certainly pay more attention when ordering from now on tho cuz I didn't know about that difference
Thank you Bill !
This was the project I asked about the level shifters for
Ignore the sound of my breathing, work makes me wear a mask, so I 3d printed a Bane mask, which had a side effect of slightly magnifying the sound of my breathing
It was totally not on purpose
Well, maybe a little bit
Very nice. Perhaps replacing the Darth Vader breathing with some Xmas music would be good?
Ok, I'll give it a try
Although, I'd probably be better off trying this on one of my Jetson Nanos than my completely overworked desktop with 500 open Chrome tabs, a dozen Putty windows, half a dozen WinSCP connections, a couple of VNC instances, an IdeaMaker slicer that I at least have a clue what I'm doing with, and an Arduino IDE that I totally don't have an idea what I'm doing with
So, with that being said, here's the upgraded video with some almost totally not completely inappropriate music added to it as an experiment in video editing
How'd I do ?
