The Raspberry Pi 4 has just been released, in versions with 1 to 4 GB of RAM.  It also has Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3  ports, WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0 and it supports two 4K HDMI displays.

The 1.5GHz quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 CPU is supposed to be 3 times faster than the Pi 3.

I just pre-ordered a 4GB one from Pimoroni.  It's supposed to ship at the beginning of July, I paid for courier so it should arrive here in the workshop soon.

DB1 may have a new navigation computer - I was looking for a "Pi Killer" and it may turn out to be another Pi!

Anyone else picking one of these up?

?

Bill

Just look out for the upcoming reviews on YouTube, then we will see if it is a Pi-killer or not.

Although, for 35 bucks, it is worth trying out!

35 bucks buys you the 1 GB model, by the time I paid for 4 GB and courier shipping it was more like 75 bucks (US Dollars).

You can add me to the list of reviews you'll see on YouTube soon, so if you can think of any good benchmarks to run on it please let me know.   I'd obviously compare it to the Pi 3, but it might be interesting to see how it fares against the Nvidia Jetson Nano, since I already have two of those.

I can't wait to get my hands on one of  these so I can compare the GPU performance versus the Jetson Nano. I just wish they had gone to a barrel jack power connector for power instead of USB-C as after 3 or so more models USB probably won't be viable for power.

Edit:  USB-C isn't/wasn't known as the worlds most reliable powering method, at least at the beginning.

If you mean the USB-micro power on the 3B and 3B+, then no, it's USB-C on the 4 Model B.

I also wish they had gone with the barrel jack, now I have to get a USB C power supply (I do have one, but I use it for a Windows tablet).

Also, the HDMI jacks are not full-size, so you may need to pick up some adapters or special cables to hook up some video monitors.

I'm in the market for a good USB C power supply for this, needs to put out 3 amps minimum. Any suggestions? I hear that some of these have had reliability issues.

With all the adapters, the cost is going up steeply.

Is the Pi going to do so much number crunching that you need 4GB ram?

Exactly, another consideration is that for small scale robots were the Pi is being powered by a USB battery you will need to shell out more for a power supply.  In that case I would probably still stick with a 3B+ because it has a good power to performance and price ratio that other boards.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the 'desktop' bundle comes with all the adapters including HDMI, power, etc.

Depends, if you are just using it for light stuff like the Arduino IDE then you can get by with 1GB quite easily. If you use it for a robots main/only processor then get 4GB-you won't ever regret having some spare memory.

I'm looking forward to it but will wait a few months after launch. There will be OS and library growing pains like there were on the Pi 3 introduction.

Exciting though!

I have gotten away from using standard USB power supplies. Since I find myself using 5 Volts so often, I went ahead and got something like this Mean Well. I set up something similar to your ATX power supply panel. There is no power meter and just 4 sets of banana jacks.

I make custom power cables with banana plugs on one end, decent gauge wire in the middle and various types of connectors at the other end.

Maybe it is just me and my lack of attention to details.... But it always seems I was getting caught short by grabbing an under powered wall wart or even more commonly grabbing a USB cable with such fine wire that the voltage would drop under load and cause erratic behavior. I make enough mistakes on my own I don't need to add the challenges created by under-voltage issues.

(my) Twobits (on this matter 🙂

A modern-day Macbook/iPhone charger...?

I don't know if that would work but it would be a neat DIYer/Hacker thing to do.

I'm still using the A+ model Raspberry Pi for my robot projects.    I actually have 4 of them and 1 model B+.

I figure that until I actually reach a place where these are somehow holding me back they're good enough.   And right now I'm not even close to that point.  In fact, the A+ is working so well for me I'm even thinking of buying some more before they become obsolete and hard to come by.   If I ever get to the point where I feel boxed in, then I'll upgrade.  But right now I can't even imagine that happening.    The A+ has more than enough capabilities for what I'm hoping to achieve.
