You can pick up a usb micro to usb type C adapter pretty cheap. the full 3A is only required if you plan on using the full 1.2A capacity of the downstream usb sockets while the cpu is at full load. the 2.5A from the 3B+ will work perfectly well.

Quote from https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/

"If you’d like to re-use a Raspberry Pi 3 Official Power Supply, our resellers are offering a $1 adapter which converts from USB micro-B to USB-C. The thick wires and good load-step response of the old official supply make this a surprisingly competitive solution if you don’t need a full 3 amps."

That being said, you may aswell just buy the official powersupply for 8$ ?

Yeah, I saw that too. He does a great job on SBC videos, just wish he did more projects with them.

USB A to C cables are readily available and I've just order one rated at 5 amps.   So as long as your existing usb power supply can supply the necessary amps there should not be any need to get a new usb C power supply.  I have been using an Ankar 48 watt multiple usb power supply of some vintage to power multiple pi3's without any power issues.  It appears to be able to provide a variable power supply to its usb ports (of course up to 48 watts in total) so it should drive a couple of 15 watt rpi4's :-).  I'll have to await my new A to C cable to arrive before trying it though.

Wow, I didn't know there were ones with that high a current rating.

Back on the subject of the Pi 4, there are some interesting reviews coming out:

This one really puts it through a number of benchmarks - https://medium.com/@ghalfacree/benchmarking-the-raspberry-pi-4-73e5afbcd54b

And this one compares it to the NVIDIA Jetson Nano - https://buildazure.com/2019/06/24/raspberry-pi-4-vs-nvidia-jetson-nano-developer-kit/

As for the USB C power supply, Pimoroni was out of stock of the "official" one when I pre-ordered my Pi 4. And while you quoted only 8 dollars for it most of the offerings I see on Amazon are 25 - 60 dollars, depending upon the wattage.  So I'm still looking.

I expect to receive my Pi 4 by early to mid-July.

Bill

Thanks for the Nano comparision link. Are you going to do a video exclusively about the RPi 4 once you get yours?

Ahh Bill, I think I pinched your pi4 power supply in error as somehow I ordered an international one instead of a uk one.  It works of course but I don't need all the international options and it was more expensive 🙁 .  Worst is I  probably wont even be using it as the usb A to C (5 amp rated) arrived to day and the pi4 is linked up to my venerable usb A power supply hub and is happily cooking away (it does get toasty).  I thought I saw some usb sockets in your workshop tour, but maybe they are not 3 amp rated.   I read the links to the reviews with interest, but one thing I find is I get enough issues from time to time with the pi raspian linux and the various github libraries etc and the support from the user community is really helpful in getting things sorted.  This I feel is sometimes lacking for other sbc's and it why I hope the rpi 4 ends up as your choice for Real Robot project.  I look forward to your review of the pi4.

So that's what happened to my power supply!

I can always get a USB C cable and power this from my bench power supply, the USB sockets you see in the workshop are unfortunately not capable of 3 amps.

And yes Auto.ai Robotics, I do indeed to devote a video and article to the Pi 4.

As for the robot (DB1), I'll be interested in seeing how it performs using ROS. It could indeed have a home as the navigation (base) microcomputer, where I currently have a Pi 3.

?

I too hope Bill uses a RPi for the main brain of the DB1 project.  I'm also hoping that Bill will use Python as his main brain program language on the Pi. ?

Whatever he does I'm looking forward to seeing how he's going to tie this all together into a single robot "consciousness" (for lack of a better term).

I think I will wait till October or November to get one. Then I'll do the RPI shuffle!

Two usb 3 ports and two mini hdmi ports and true gigabit Ethernet, but ethernet is linked to the usb2 channel so limited to 300 mb/s data transfer. USB type C power connector, faster processor speed and more ram. Pretty good upgrade for a 45 dollar price point. It wasn’t supposed to be out this soon, we should probably call this Christmas in July.
