I'm having the same problems.

Ive had problems with these radios too. Even with the adapter there seems to be some problem with the power stability. Adding a 10uF capacitor across the vin and gnd at the power connection on the adapter and using an external power supply on the arduino so it isnt relying on the usb power has made a big difference. Not saying that will solve your problem, but it has made my radios much more reliable.
