Let me know if you have experience with WS2812 LEDs or know of links. I have done some work, but my hunch is there is more to learn for even more impressive displays.
I am not married to any MPU/MCU, I have most of them, so I can use anything. My hunch and a bit of reading tell me the ESP32 has the power for thousands of LEDs, but the Pi family might have the edge in more complex hardware/software solutions.
ALL ideas/comments are welcome, I am hoping for some brilliant creativity from the younger guys here (age less than 80 is younger LOL)

Hardware - Expert in 1401, and 360, fairly knowledge in PC plus numerous MPU's and MCU's

@inq I do want to go the DIY route. My suspicion is that with the right code it is possible to get a lot more out of the LEDs.
