To be clear, the SSID and Password you enter into the Shelly is the exact same SSID and Password you set up in your Router.  The same as you had to do when you originally put your wifi details into your cellphone way back when you first set it up (way before your Shelly days).

So if your router does not have a Password then you will not put one into your Shelly config.  But if your home wifi does not have a password then a passing kiddie (or worse) with a network scanner to be able to gain full access to your computers so fix it fast if thats the case.

Once the Shelly has your home network SSID and PW configured you do not have to enter these again.  Once set up and in client mode you can connect to it with its ip address and the pw is not required.

I don't have a Shelly AP set up to remember the exact steps I used to configure it, all I remember is I did not have any problem in doing so, so I hope you will soon twig how to do it.   Maybe its time for a cuppa and work through the instructions carefully.

I do have other Shelly1's I could wire up to connect to a Shelly Access Point, but I use mains wiring and don't have a 12v source.  And for mains wiring I would have to get or print a suitable safe enclosure and locate a mains plug etc, and I cannot do this right now.

You may wish to look at some youtube videos about the Shelly1, of which there are many, and you can probably find one that guides you through the configure process.

Keep at it, you are almost there 😀

You may have missed the following reply I sent if you are responding only to subscription email notifications like I do.

Questions regarding the shelly 1 browser interface:

"WiFi Client Mode (CM): allows the Device to connect to an available WiFi network. In order to switch to this mode, the User must enter the name (SSID) and the password to connect to a local WiFi network.  After entering the correct details, press Connect."

 * Some of the command buttons are self explanatory, but I haven't figured out how to change      mode to WiFi Client Mode (CM).  Do I send a command via text from the browser or what?

 * Where do I "enter the name (SSID) and the password to connect to a local WiFi network"

* Can I NOT have a password (leave it blank) - I hate to have to use a PW from now on.

Frank

once I change the shelly 1 device to Client Mode, will I need to use a different method to bring up the shelly on board interface next time I connect?

Just to remind you to re-read my post before your Eureka post as I gave full details in that post about connecting to your shelly when you have put it into client mode.

I think you just follow the instruction you posted - put in the details and 'press Connect'

I have arrived at "there" - I can turn my relay on or off or toggle it by sending your http commands to a web browser manually - and since my VB PC app does that a lot for other functions, I think we are at problem-solved.

I haven't figured out how to make my router NOT reassign IPs, but that's a separate problem.

I did do ONE thing right during this project - appeal to dronebotworkshop forum for help and lucked out that you responded.

I've been keeping a note book of all the steps from opening the shelly box to listening to the relay click.  There are probably step(s) missing or insufficiently worded for me to understand them on the next relay(s) but I am close to tears happy to have a relay working.

I cannot thank you enough Byron - My very very best wishes for you in all your endeavors.

Frank
