Hi Ron,

For the .bat test, etc. above, just the old 'Command Prompt', the carry over from MSDos days,  not one of the Powershell variants.  NB this is Windows 10 ... hopefully the most recently revised version on general release. But I don't use it with the Linux add-on part that MS have been developing.

My feeling, which may be inaccurate, is that MS have gradually added bits of Unix-like facilities, but in an unstructured way, so one things works and the next thing doesn't.

Best wishes, Dave

@davee Powershell is the new guy. There is no 'add-on' of *nix that I am aware of now, and the addition of *nix started prior to Win 7. Since I did some contract work for the team that took Msft into the modern era I have a bit of insight but can't say much more than that due to NDA's etc.

I don't remember what the default terminal app was for Win 10, it's too far in the past now, but for Win 11 it's powershell.

In any case, this is a bit off-topic for the OP.

Hi Ron @zander,

I have Powershell, though I haven't used much.

By Linux Add-on, I meant WSL 'Windows Subsystem for Linux', which since it is a separate optional download on Win 10, so it feels like an add-on to me.

I am not sure which terminal-like programme I would regard as a 'default' on Win 10. They seem to have different users/programs. I think the old 'MSDos style' one was installed with the standard install, I can't remember if I had to add Powershell.

As you say, its a rather off-topic, so I'll wish you all the best, and leave it at that. Dave
