im getting over windows and im going to be switching over to linux.

Used Linux in the past as my PC for about 3-4 years but i haven't used it in a few years.

I'm just trying to get a sense of what is good now days for an all around distro for my  main computer

I'm thinking about mint its looking good but would love some feed back

Thank, Jon

My vote is for mint, I'm using it on my main computer and my only grumble would be the way it handles networking.  It's a dual boot with Win10, so I get the best of both worlds and I can still use windows if I have to.

The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy, but these are new. They look human... sweat, bad breath, everything. Very hard to spot.

cool, sadly though networking is what im looking for.

the reason i want to get rid of windows is appertly on windows 10 if you set up HostGroup using an email it can trigger a bug that sets all your files to read only (found out the hard way) so now my 500 gig system drive is set to read only. ive tried system restores, factory reset and a few other "fixes" from microsoft

I've got 3 other people in the house and im setting up a media server (i know windows was a bad idea for it to start with but im lazy and pakdabol to many.

dont really play games on my pc so im looking mainly at stabilty and with windows support for file sharing without it being to much of a pain in the arse

Don't get me wrong Mint does networking just fine. My grumble is only about the software used to configure the network.  The Mint visual interface is good for most things but setting up anything fancy (like multiple IP addresses) is a pain.

I use Raspberry Pi Desktop (for PC and Mac).  No particular reason apart from familiarity with the RPi raspian desktop.

Ran Ubuntu for years and it worked fine. Too fine. Recently switched to Manjaro for that unstable Linux feeling.

Linux has come a long way since Slackware.  That wasn't the earliest one of course, but it was the first one I tried.  I've played with different versions over the years, but only used it as a daily driver in the past six years.

Currently, I'm using Mint on my primary non-Windows PC.  I tend to switch versions every few years or so.
I have Manjaro on a laptop I use for testing, and it runs quite well.

For the fun laptops, I've installed Raspberry Pi Desktop (Debian based) on an older model Dell and on a 2010 MacBook Air.
The cool thing with Raspberry Pi desktop on the laptops is that I can plug Raspberry Pi zero W's into the USB Ports and teach Scratch because it uses the GPIO pins of the zero W as an extension to the desktop.  They are also available for students during the school year to practice programming on as well.  These two computers also have the Arduino IDE installed, making it possible to write sketches on and load them directly onto an arduino.  (more fun)

For your case in leaving Windows behind, as there are so many Distro's available, I'm sure there will be as many opinions as to which is the best, and none of them will necessarily be wrong.  This is like a trick question on a test in school.  None of the answers are wrong, but one will be more right for you.  🙂
