Hi All,

My name is Hayden Barker, I am very excited to be part of the forum. I have always had an interest in tinkering and IT. Had a pretty decent IT career and now manage a computer cabling installation company. I recently started using some of out spare warehouse space to engage in Aquaponics. This aquaponics project became more of an electronics tinkering project and I have as yet not grown a single plant. I have however purchased 3 Arduinos, loads of sensors and spent hours learning how to use them. This is the most connected failing garden there ever was. That said, I will have time over the coming months to set it up properly and from there, all my tech should make it easy to manage. I really enjoy the workshop tutorials and their mix of theory and practice. I am originally from New Zealand, but now call Canada home. Feel free to reach out to me about aquaponics, arduino, general IT, some linux, SQL and Excel VBA.

How will you use the Arduinos to help you with the aquaponic garden?

Cheers!

I have created a chop and flip system like the one here :

From there I ended up learning the hard way all the things that make aquaponics work. pH levels, temperature, light levels, pump flow meter, syphon meter, relays to turn lights on/off, pump on/off.... all that sort of thing.

I have nicknamed the project ArduinoPonics. Happy to post my progress in a topic if people are interested.

@sean451 Here is a link to a few photos of both my tiny prototype with only 1 goldfish, and by barrel that is a work in progress for larger scale. All of this is prototype for a much bigger indoor farming initiative.

Now you've made me hungry for that basil.

Cheers!

I had a dabble in hydroponics last year, just a kit with a tray, a pump and provided (and expensive) fertilisers to feed the plants.   It all worked out quite well, though not noticeably better than my earth planted veggies.  To progress further I need to establish my own fertiliser source for the hydroponics as I could have purchased the veggies cheaper. 😀

Its certainly something I will look to take on and improve in the future and seeing how you use your ArduinoPonics is of great interest to me, so I look forward to your future posts.

@byron cool ! Always glad to know there is someone else interested. I am just rewriting my prototype code into something more presentable and I can share it with you. I have all the Amazon links for parts and such. My main problem has been that I was trying to do it in our workshop at work, and lighting was inconsistent. I'm buying a grow tent, figure in for a penny in for a pound. So far the project has been more about Arduino than agriculture but I'm hoping as I get everything I need that will turn around and I will have a somewhat automated garden.

I believe there is a projects section on the forum here so I might start a post there for people to follow my progress, it will also be available on my blog at www.kiwi-solutions.ca. as money allows, I'll be moving my website to an rPi rather than cheap internet hosting. Much cooler 🙂

This afternoon's testing and playing. I had it all working really nicely but the code was a nightmare. I'm taking a leaf out of Linus Torvalds book and add some "taste" to my code. I learned how to use functions for repeated tasks which is totally going to clean a lot of stuff up, and I guess save some memory eventually.

...and as you can see there is no room in my condo for a workshop, so the side of my desk is the best it gets.
