Can I power an Arduino (or any micro controller board) from XMas lights?

I'd like to make some Christmas ornaments for people for this year. As a maker I thought I'd step it up some and put some electronics in the gifts. Is it possible to run an Arduino off the power that comes out of a strand of lights? I'd like to plug my ornaments directly into the light strand. I realize that this power is AC and would need to be converted. Before I started digging into this I thought I would as to see if someone has done it and what parts they used. Thank you and happy holidays!

My guess would be that most strands of lights aren't the same as every other stand

I'd suggest taking a voltage reading off the strand and see what it tells you. After that, a buck-boost converter could probably solve any issues you find

Probably not the best idea, but, that's what I would do (which is how I know it's probably not a great idea)

Thank you very much for the advice! I just thought it would be really cool to make gifts that just plug right into the tree lights and not have to worry about batteries 😉
