Powering the Pro Mini with 12v via the RAW pin. Both 3.3v and 5v versions.

There was no mention of powering the Mini with 12v in your April 2017 video about the various Arduinos.

I want to use solar to charge capicators and/or batteries to power the mini in a LoRa node and plan to power it via the RAW pin without any external voltage regulator. Powering the Hope rfm95 via the mini's 3.3v pin.

The Spec sheet suggests it is acceptable to use up to 12v on the RAW pin.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I would not put 12v that is unregulated to the raw input. That's the maximum you can use. Not sure of your solar panel specs, but you may want to use a small switching regulator like a UBEC to take the power from the solar/cap/bats/charge controller, and send that to the UBEC and the out of the UBEC to the Mini's raw.

I think you can do that if you are careful, just use a capacitor on the power supply, but I strongly discourage powering any logic/processing systems from a power source that is also being utilized by a high start-up current device, like a wheelchair motor, etc.

Thanks for the UBEC suggestion but I'm steering clear of any switching components due to their RFI potential. I'm going to test the capability of the mini's regulator. If it fails, it's was a cheap test.

Thanks for the feedback. The only load on the mini will be the LoRa and a PIR with a very infrequent use.

If that is your only load on the 12v line (the mini) it should work fine. FYI I usually just use a 5v stepdown module with them and it works fine.
