Hi Ron @zander,

I completely understand ... sometimes the pragmatic solution is the only viable solution.

 Sorry I couldn't  help.

Best wishes, Dave

Hi @frogandtoad,

 Once again thanks.

Only one minor query .. "Although that may work for the routers that do support dns caching, it won't work to clear the cache from your local network computer,"

Did I make it clear that I always reboot the networked computers, typically only one whilst trying to get things to work, after updating the router DHCP config?

I haven't checked it out thoroughly, but I presumed DNS cache in the network computer was memory based (Not persistent on disk, etc). so whilst TTL would mean it kept the cache value for a time in 'normal' operation, but a reboot would force the network computer to go back to the router, which by that time had a different story to tell, as it too had been rebooted.

And from what I could see (in terms of waiting a few seconds for reboot, and logging back in etc), after changing my router DHCP settings, the router seemed to change when the changes were 'applied'

Plus the networked computer, changed when it too was subsequently rebooted.

I can imagine that some routers might be able to store the DHCP and other similar config information without a full reboot .. my limited observations of home routers is that they tend to reboot when you hit the 'apply' button, and I presume this overwrites any TTL considerations.

Am I being fooled? (And not for the first time.. 🙄 )

Thanks and best wishes,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Unless I was taught wrong, or something has changed over the years, I had always thought that a restart would not clear the cache, at least for Windows and MAC machines.  Maybe "I've" been fooled all along 🙂

Let me do some research on this matter and get back to you with my findings.

Cheers
