I was watching a program on TV recently about how many products from Chinese websites were arriving in Europe as fakes.

But one thing really grabbed my attention and that is the abuse of the CE mark. The explanation is as follows:

  1. On the genuine CE mark, of all of the faces on the right hand side are perfectly aligned.
  2. On the fake CE, the face of the middle bar ends about 0.5mm before perfect alignment.

On first glance, these marks appear to be identical. When challenged on this issue, the Chinese trade ministry said their mark stood for Chinese Export, and not for any conformity to EU standards.

Buyer beware!

Like most of us I buy A LOT of electronics stuff from China on ebay.  However, I have a rule that I NEVER buy anything that uses mains power --- only low voltage stuff.  This way I only suffer disapointment from substandard goods and not anything more serious.

Recently I have been buying a lot of CMOS logic chips and op-amps from China as I am doing some experiments with building audio synthesiser circuits.  On a significant percentage of my purchases the fonts and logos on these chips don't quite match those on the chips I buy from reputable local suppliers.  I don't know whether these are recovered chips that have been painted and re-labelled, clone chips or completely useless dummies.  I guess testing these will be a usefull learning exercise in itself, but I will be buying a lot more of this type of stuff locally now.
