I worked for IBM when we first looked at it in the 70's.

Were you the guy who famously said "The world will need only 6 of these computers" ?

@hilldweller No, I am not that famous, or more correctly infamous.

First computer 1959. Retired from my own computer company 2004.
Hardware - Expert in 1401, and 360, fairly knowledge in PC plus numerous MPU's and MCU's
Major Languages - Machine language, 360 Macro Assembler, Intel Assembler, PL/I and PL1, Pascal, Basic, C plus numerous job control and scripting languages.
Sure you can learn to be a programmer, it will take the same amount of time for me to learn to be a Doctor.

What a shame, it was an all time classic.

It's all about seeing the big picture, which is what we are trying to see here with regard to the impact of AI. Though  it might be better to ignore "AI" as a buzzword and think in terms of the threat of ever more powerful computers and the effect on our grandchildren. My eldest granddaughter is 22, so she will experience it.

She is a typical young person. She lives on her phone, she thinks Alexa is great, she sees no threat.

@hilldweller I also use Alexa, SIRI, and Google, but they are not AI. While you may think AI is harmless, people I respect and with creds say AI and nuclear war are the two biggest threats to mankind.  I rank nuclear war first and AI a distant second SO FAR, but with quantum computers looming large, AI will be massively accelerated, and then it may become #1.

Perhaps you did not notice that some of the leaders of the top AI companies have either asked the US Congress to limit them or have resigned in order to make a statement. That should give us pause.

Maybe I and some others who have expressed a view here disagree with you because we include the concept of 'sentient' in our definition of 'intelligence.' I think without that, it is just good rules-based procedural code. It looks more impressive due to the affordability of computing power, memory, and artificial vision (around for maybe 20 yrs)

I, at 81, certainly will not be around to see how it all turns out and likely neither will you if you have grandchildren that old, but our children will certainly find out one way or the other. Good luck!

I, at 81,

Another Olde Farte. I'm 79.

I wonder if Bill could do an electric Zimmer Frame with GPS so we can get out a bit and always return home.
