@dastardlydoug I am not an expert, but I think you can do all that with as few as 2 pins using a shift register. But even if using a direct connect method it's still only 4+2+sensors out of a possible 22 pins available on the esp32.

Yeah that one. I can't imagine what I will do with the hundreds of $ worth of stuff I recently bought. I guess it's still in the Amazon window of return 🤣

@dastardlydoug I assume that's close to where the system will be. I have an esp32-cam running about 20+ ft from me through a few walls and it works great but it has an external antenna.

How much of a PIA is an external antennae? What do I need for that?

@dastardlydoug I don't know if those boards have the connector for one, take a close look both sides for a tiny connector and a 0 ohm resistor you need to unsolder and move usually to activate the antenna.

EDIT I don't see any provision for ext antenna on those boards.

@dastardlydoug Just put the board in a breadboard and load any wifi sample sketch then test it from the location you plan on using for the completed project. The 'ScanNetworks' sample sketch should be good enough. There are at least a dozen samples under the WiFi101 collection.

@dastardlydoug Check out the video and blog here on shift registers, that will show you how to control dozens of relays with only 3 logic pins plus 5V and Gnd of course. Video  Blog

@dastardlydoug Interesting yes, but let's not complicate things. Do a test to determine WiFi range first before adding more hardware and software to massage the data at both ends. I would personally add another router repeater first before adding a totally different radio.

@zander

Did you find out anything useful from my relay system I'm using?
