I'm a semi-retired geologist/hydrogeologist with an interest in computers, cars, and integrating electronics with computers and cars. I hope to gain a better understanding of how I can put electronics to work from this forum.

Hi @jeffberk combing cars and computers is a long-time activity. I suggest you learn about CAN BUS as that is the industry standard. Of course, that is only for real cars, not models, although a purist might go that far.

First computer 1959. Retired from my own computer company 2004.
Hardware - Expert in 1401, and 360, fairly knowledge in PC plus numerous MPU's and MCU's
Major Languages - Machine language, 360 Macro Assembler, Intel Assembler, PL/I and PL1, Pascal, Basic, C plus numerous job control and scripting languages.
Sure you can learn to be a programmer, it will take the same amount of time for me to learn to be a Doctor.

Hi @jeffberk,... welcome to the formum!

I'm sure you will find plenty of folks willing and able to help you with any questions or solutions to your future projects..This is a group of people with a very wide variety of skill sets for novice to expert, in the arts of hardware and software development. As with anything worthwhile, it takes time, and a lot of patients to to learn something new, and since your retired now, like me, you now have all the time you need without work getting in the way...lol

I was an industrial Electrical/Instrumentation process controls tech for almost 50 years, working with industrial process automation systems monitoring and controlling every aspect of physical control you can image..IE: Flows, pressure,Level, Temperature, load cells, motion, speed..etc, and analyzers of many different properties (pH,ORP,Conductivity, etc.

Now that I'm retired, I use my time to learn more about MPC (micro-processor controllers) used in hobby projects, and robotics specifically.

Have fun, and be safe..

Regards,

LouisR
