I am a retired engineer looking to find inspiration for new projects.  I like working on projects that have practical application and are unique but also fun to implement. Hard to find these for me, so mostly I tinker around in my continued search.

An example of previous project: I  developed a home automation system on Raspberry Pi, with a web page to control X10, Insteon devices, etc, and then developed an iPhone app for it to control my lights, fans, etc. This was many years ago using one of the 1st RASPI's.  This worked great for many years until hardware became outdated, app became outdated and I retired it to automate my home with Amazon Alexa.  I now leverage my home infrastructure of smart devices using it.

Hi Alj,

Sounds like some very cool projects! I have a tub of X10 stuff, that I keep telling myself I need to put into a project. For years, I bought every X10 device I found at thrift stores etc.  It seems like the hardware should be somewhat timeless, based on our Edison style electrical systems. But the reality is, I have a tub of the stuff I don't use. My wife doesn't like the unnecessary possible complications to turn on a light, and my desire to automate stuff, "just because I can" had dwindled.

I am curious about how your Raspberry Pi was implemented with home automation.

I find that I must ask myself, what I need/want to do with electronics, and not what can I do. Because the latter is becoming a long, slippery slope.

Imagine by thought, create, don't wait, Scott.

@whitneydesignlabs I agree.  I retire all my X10 devices, I think two years ago I had one last light switch that I removed;  Insteon was my slow replacement for all of them about 5 years ago, but it was expensive.  Eventually they will also be obsolete.

I just cleaned out my junk piles getting rid of older stuff.  Too many old HDDs, cables, etc that were also obsolete.

I also ask myself the same question...  no answer..  so I tinker around until an answer will one day come to me.  🙂
