It is really interesting to see all the fellow 'olds' here on the forum.

One of the frustrations I experience with the current maker movement is attitude of hurry up and get it done. Many of the projects are insanely clever... But, the fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired.

I was thinking about this over the weekend. I got the chance this weekend to go with my uncle to visit the shop of one of his fellow 'car guys'. While we were talking, Al was restoring a vintage motor cycle. He was building the wiring harness from scratch.

It was fascinating to watch this old craftsman work. While building the harness, his fingers almost absentmindedly worked the bundles to make sure that they followed the contours of the frame without any sharp radius bends or binding points. Once he was happy with the placement of the bundles he worked the the individual wires within the bundles to make sure they were parallel and did not have any kinks. Only then, did he cut the individual wires to length and fit the connectors. The end result was as much art as it was mechanical.

Just by looking at him you could see there was no where else in the world he would rather be than puttering in his shop.

Please don't get me wrong, there is a place for 'Get it Done.' But at my stage in life, my hobbies are more about doing. Not about getting anything done.

Looking forward to see other aspiring craftsman in this virtual workshop.
