Hi,

I'm 43 and live in Ontario Canada.  I don't work in the electronics field but I do have an interest in how/why things work.  So unfortunately I don't bring a lot of experience to the table, probably just a lot of questions.

As a new hobbyist, I've started out with learning a few of the basic programming techniques for micro controllers.  I am about to assemble my first automation project.

I look forward to meeting people with similar interests, learning new things and discussing project ideas.

Thanks,
Shane

Hello Shane,

Welcome. It's a friendly, helpful group. What are you going to be automating? One of the projects I have on my list is a watering bowl for my cats since they like to drink from a moving water source.

Hi Noweare,

Thank you for the warm welcome.

I would like to have my aquarium lighting automated, sunrise/sunset etc.. and temperature monitoring with notifications, for this reason I've chosen the ESP32 for its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities.  It can easily keep current time and run the schedules without additional modules.

I could buy an off the shelf controller to do all this and more for many $$$. But where is the fun and learning in that.

Thanks,
Shane

Agreed, it's always better to build it yourself. The esp32 is getting to be the most popular goto board for connected devices. It does a lot. I spent a couple of months learning how to use it and I feel like I just scratched the surface. Very complex compared to other microcontrollers that I have worked with.
