David from Ontario, Canada here.
While I do a little work in the tech world (some coding/web development type stuff, some video), it is oddly enough my move _away_ from that world that brings me here. My wife and I have been trending towards self-sufficiency for a while now, but more prominently over the last decade or so. A lot of our projects and infrastructure are pretty well developed but now I'm starting to go through and introduce more automation and tech.
So I have a little setup on a Pi Zero W that is pulling in data from ESP8266-based systems (mirrored to another local db and backed up to a remote server, of course). Greenhouse data, some weather stuff and temperatures in my half-photovoltaic/half-mains water heater. I also just built a little PID sous-vide egg cooker from an old coffee pot so we have four just-cooked and warm sous-vide eggs (from our own chickens, of course) ready when we wake up each morning. It can also be started manually if you need eggs for a different meal.
Lots of plan to come, though. I need to throw a chip in our chicken coop to do an automatic door, monitor some temperatures, run the light, control the anti-freezing element in the water system while I'm at it. I want to automate the greenhouse ventilation (passive operable section + active fan). I want to move the aforementioned household PV/mains water heater from its simple control system now to a more sophisticated (possibly getting into machine learning here) control system. I also have some stuff sitting here (much of it scrounged) to up the security on the property and other assorted projects.
You know, fun stuff. 😀
Hi David
Wow, it sounds like you have created an amazing environment control system already, and your enhancements will really make it first class.
I'd love to see some of this - if you have the time post a photo or two in the "Projects Corner" section so we can all take a look.
Welcome to the forum!
