After some thought and experimentation I will probably settle on a round robot base using, for cost reasons, the hardware of a robot vacuum cleaner on which to add more sensors (including webcams) and maybe a arm plus a RPi for increasing its AI abilities. This was my first version.
However I found some Bamboo round trays looked much nicer.
