Hi Everyone

I know that some of you have experienced issues with the forum, I haven't been immune to them as well. I've created this post so that you can report them in one place, rather than scattered across the nearly 300 topics we have on the forum!

Typicals issues involve things like the following:

  • Error Messages (some people get messages about posting too quickly for example).
  • Timeouts - you can usually tell this is an issue when you get a "spinning wheel" in the upper corner that won't go away.
  • Posting problems - issues uploading images, attachments, code, etc.

If you could be kind enough to report the following information it would really be helpful:

  • Your location - the server is in Toronto, Canada, so your distance from Toronto will factor in.
  • Your Internet Speed - doesn't have to be exact, just roughly - are you on a 5MBps line or a 500 MBps line? You can type "Internet Speed Test" into Google and get a Measurement Lab speed test built into the search results. Note that it only tests up to 100MBps, but if your above that you probably don't have a speed issue anyway.  Please note the upload and download speed, typically upload speed is a lot slower.
  • Your Web Browser and OS - the site should work on every modern browser and operating system, however that may not be entirely true!

Aside from that please describe the problem you're experiencing and how often it occurs.

I'd like to really grow this forum over the next few months and I need to decide if I stay with the platform we are on or if I invest in a different one. I use the word "invest" as the move will cost both time and money if I migrate to a different platform, but I'm willing to do it if the need arises.

I'd like to make this a useful resource for as many people as possible, so if you're having issues I do want to know about them so I can take action to repair this forum or migrate to a new one.

Thanks!

Bill

Hi Bill,

I get this just about every time I post: "502 Bad Gateway nginx". The message does post, and I just go to the forum root page and it's listed.  If you do a refresh there it will repost it.

I looked and nginx is the http server running the forum, so it is coming from the hosting site.

I have a 1g connection. Running Linux and Chrome but it does it in Windows and Firefox as well. I'm in Charlotte, NC, so a few hops away.  I do get the spinning wheel a good bit, especially when trying to quote a post. Most times a reply will work, but a quote will not.

I know in the past I have seen 502's as catch-all errors, so it could be anything.

Just got a Bad Gateway 505 error while trying to post a reply to @triform.

And tried to insert a snip of the error and it doesn't seem to have worked.

When I got the Bad Gateway error I clicked on the refresh button twice and was warned each time that it might cause my action to be repeated.  Sure enough when I reload the Forum page my post was there three times.

I was able to delete the two duplicates but had to reload the forum each time to see that each had indeed been deleted.

Oh, I also notice you have more issues with longer threads, i.e. more than one page of replies. Also, when posting an image (uploading it) to a long thread, I get errors, but if I go to a short thread and upload from there, there is no issue.

Are there any .core files about in the forums home directory? It may be crashing on lager posts.

OK, just saw @triform post about same error!

The error I was getting was 502 not 505 and it mentioned nginx as well.

And I'm using the latest Chrome under Win10 and Speedtest just reported download 48.87Mbps and upload of 11.03Mbps, so don't think it is related to speed.  I'm located in Stone Mountain, GA just outside of Atlanta.

@triform - No core dump files. I've just downloaded a bunch of Nginx log files but I have to confess that I'm no expert in reading them so it may take me a while to go through them.

The server monitoring doesn't show any excessive memory consumption or CPU usage. It's the same server I use for the main DroneBot Workshop site, as well as the survey site (which I'd like to eventually integrate into the forum).

The 502 error (Bad Gateway) can be a difficult one to solve, I've been reading up on it.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My concern is - do I have a problem with the forum software itself or with the web server configuration?  If it is the forum software then I have found another platform that I can migrate to and try, but if it's the server setup then migrating to another platform probably won't solve the issues. Plus, to be honest, the other forum templates I looked at don't look as nice as this one IMHO.

I do have a reasonable amount of control over the server settings, it's a cloud VPS hosted on Digital Ocean.  I can modify many PHP. MySQL, Apache, and Nginx settings. Of course, I have to keep in mind that the changes will also affect the main website, so I need to be careful.

I also have a staging server to experiment with code changes and I can clone the forum at any time.  So I can run a lot of tests.

Thanks to everyone for there input so far, please keep it coming. Once again, any suggestions would be appreciated - I used to work with this stuff but it was back in the 90's so I'm a little out of touch!

😎

Bill

Got the 502 error while replying to your post about moving the 3D Printer thread.  That was using Chrome.

And using Edge I was unable to even login.  Tried twice and got an error to contact administrator.

I used to cringe when I got that error back in the day, because I was the administrator.  Like what the heck was I supposed to do?!  🤣

Well, it certainly isn't speed-related for you, you have a pretty quick internet connection.

I can relate, I too have been an administrator who was contacted because of that silly message!

I just tried Edge and logged in without any problem as "ArduinoGuy", my "phantom moderator".

One interesting piece of information you provided was the actual post that gave you the error.  It seems you posted at 8:39 am EDT, so I'll check around that time for a corresponding entry in the log files.

I'd love to get this fixed!

Well so far it isn't a show stopper for us users, just an inconvenience, but for you trying to track down the issue it has to be a nightmare.

And I seem to get the 502 error as I post each reply.  Wonder if I'll get it this time?  Won't do a separate post just to answer that question.

@dronebot-workshop, @codecage

Just got the same 502 error message, using Chrome on MacOSX.

A hard reload Cmd-Shift-R, loaded the page correctly.

Therefore, I deduce that the problem is not necessarily on the server-side.

Breathe a sigh of relief Bill!

OK, now this is getting serious - I just got the 502 error (trying to respond to Steve's post about the 3D printer)!

😫

I'm going to try restarting some services soon, to see if that helps - it's been ages since the server was rebooted, which is not uncommon for production web servers.  It's actually one of the suggestions I've seen when Googling about this problem.

Of course, this is going to knock the main DroneBot Workshop website "off the air" when I do it, which is unfortunate as traffic usually goes up when I release a new video as I did yesterday.

So you might get booted out at some point soon. Hopefully, the outage will be brief, perhaps it will help with the problem.

I'll let you know when it's done, so you can see if it helps.

That is encouraging. Did your post get "double posted" when you refreshed?

BTW, an interesting (and somewhat bizarre) suggestion on the forums support forum was to click the "Mark all read" link in the forum footer. Apparently, this cleared the issue for some users who had a high post count.  And as it seems to be getting reported by users who fit that pattern (Robo Pi was first, and he's leading everyone with his post count) it may not be as crazy as it sounds.

Give it a try, it may help. Let me know if it does please.

Thanks everyone for your help, hoping we can get this fixed!

BTW, if you notice me "liking" your post there are actually two reasons:

  1. I do actually like your post! I like all of them actually.
  2. I found that I can get a 502 error by liking a post. It causes the "spinning GIF", after which I hit F5 (I'm using a Windows 10 machine right now with Chrome) and then get a 502 error.

I've restarted a number of services, one by one while performing the above "liking" operation. But I still get the errors. Haven't restarted all of them yet, they actually restart very quickly.

Just wanted you to be aware, and don't let all of the "likes" go to your head!

😎
