Prototype to real world application

Moving the arduino from the breadboard to a functional real world device. Pitfalls, packaging, designing user friendly HMI, etc. More than one occasion I've build a breadboard circuit , coded as best i could, and everything seemed to work fine. Until i put everything into an enclosure and hooked up everything i needed to control.  The the Arduino would randomly hang up, reset constantly or output nonsense. Need an article to address EMI, good wiring practice, and "hardening" microprocessors in the real world.

  • Two projects in particular. First is an Arduino controlling a 220 volt 3 phase VFD. Four digit 7 segment LED display, two thumbwheels, 220 volt to 5 volt DC power supply, and a  5 volt relay to shut off the VFD. The Arduino went crazy until I moved it as far as I could inside the metal enclosure. From then on it worked great. Built 8 of these.
  •  Next is a Halloween display. Arduino mega, 120 to 5 volt Dc power supply ,120 to 24 volt Dc power supply. Cytron MD 10C motor controller 24 volt driving a 24 v gear motor. Two 24 volt proximity switches interfaced thru an opto board 24 volt to 5 volt. Im still fighting this one. All except the prox switches are in the same non-metalic enclosure. Arduino runs for a while then resets or just flat out stops running. Yikes!
