I'm gonna call this one... The Tube Thing, cuz, that's the first thing that popped into my head

I'm gonna start out with, um, a tube

tubething1

This, of course, is after I spent half an hour scraping the sticker off it that Home Depot so lovingly, apparently rather permanently, applied to it

Some ether convinced it that I wanted it gone tho

Then we can cut the flanged end off it, cuz I want both ends flat

tubething2

Um, no, flatter than that.

Maybe I can file it flat

Yea, um, this part could take awhile...

So now I wanna put this cap thing on the end of the tube thing...

tubething11

(They came in a pack of 2, but I'm only gonna use one) But I also wanna put a D-ring on the end of it, in case somebody wants to hang it from their belt, but I couldn't find one small enough, so I gotta make one. I'll use this rod thing

tubething3

And then I'll mangle-bend it all up into a sorta D-type shape

tubething5

And I'm gonna need a way to fasten it to the cap thingy. This piece of sheet metal should do

tubething4

I wanted to rivet it onto the cap thingy, but I don't have the room for rivets, so I'll just throw some solder on it, cuz solder is like glue for metal

I didn't take any more pictures during the build cuz I got too busy actually building it

(I have no idea how people on these youtube video document every step, it takes so much time away from actually doing what yer there to do)

So, here it is. It's for a secret santa thing at work, and the rule was $25 or less. I spent about $30 I guess

This is for a Star Wars fan, and it seemed a simple enough thing to do, so I did it

And this is the picture of the actual prop that Mark Hamil used in the first movie

Nice work!  I'm sure that will be highly prized by the Star Wars fan. ? ? ?

The actual light sword handle was found in a scrap box of photographer's shop in London, they were some sort of contraption for photo lighting, and four or five identical pieces were in the box!

@robo-pi Thank you. It actually caused a bit of a stir. My boss called in all the other mgrs for a kind of show and tell. The guy who received it asked who was his secret santa, and that turned into a bit of a joke when he was asked "You really have to ask ? Who do you think made it ?"

I think I've made a bit of a reputation. Can't imagine why

@pugwash

Yes, and the original hand grip was made of windshield wiper blades, but, I was only supposed to spend $25 on the project, and the wiper blades alone would have put me over that

I actually did a bit of research on the project, and it turns out that there wasn't a factory churning out laser swords. Each Jedi had to hand craft their own, which is why each one is different and looks cobbled together

I wondered why a light saber would need a gun sight, and that's when I figured out that Luke's sword was originally a blaster gun that Darth Vader turned into a light saber

Boring trivia is now complete, and I'm hoping I can get back to my ROS project, or, more accurately, my various ROS projects. This was a good distraction tho

If the recipient of the light sabre was pleased, then it was time, money and effort well spent. ?

I applaud you for keeping to the principles of the Star Wars original concept, i.e. making something on the lowest possible budget. That was why Lucas filmed the first film at Pinewood in London, because he couldn't get enough investors to afford a Hollywood studio.
