Working on a roaming robot need input

I am working on a roaming robot that will run around my home looking for trouble, such as smoke, fire, gas leaks, and other such issues. What is the best sensor for collision avoidance? Or would a combo be better? I have been looking into using ultrasonic and/or IR on four sides. The photo shows the 18" (44cm) round acrylic circle as the base plate and basic component layout. There will be at least 2 more of the round acrylic circles, placed 9" (22.5cm) apart.
