@mark-bolton

Further to my last post, and fearing you might not have enough homework to do, I thought I would give you another reading assignment.  (be a good boy now 😎 )

Have a look at the following video and especially 4:33 Assigning footprints to the symbols

@byron I also have an interest in the Olympics but my competition days are over. Same for making my own PCBs, and learning python.

@zander The Boards I was making are just a kknuckle dragging power distribution board .. from 8 relays to 8 x 12  .. volt lines. You cant do it on perf board.. just disgusting and not fit for purpose. you probably could on photo resist and all that muss and fuss. Time to Man up into the world of .. out sourcing disgusting chemicals.

Hey Ron I never had you down as an Olympian, I kind of think of you with short fat hairy legs.  But good for tossing the caber I guess.   Probably wise not to return to that glory period.   Like the rest of us just be content with terrorising some unsuspecting silicon chip with arduino C till it squeaks, and keep taking the medicine.  My Doc put me on some blood pressure pills and told me to exercise some more.  Hat, coat, and off for a walk... 😀

@byron Well  there's your problem right there !!  ... take not the slightest of interest in the Olympics .. you dont even have to bother with the two aspirins and I an sure you have better things to do in the morning than seek solace,

Only manly sport is spearfishing  and only if he is hunting for breakfast. And some mild small mammal stalking using  long guns or snares.. @mark-bolton I am fortunate in that I have a friend who is very good at board making so if I ever really need one I am covered.

@zander Something really horrible happened to me some time ago.. aafter which I couldn't even remember 6 numbers in a string.  I look at a book of High School Maths and it was just incomprehensible.. i burst into tears.. I "know this stuff" and I want my mind back .. (It was all abut Wild Fire an PTSD and such) .. I am regaining my focus .. I am getting it back ..  But Anxiety and Depression are a real thing. a Man cannot jump off a 3 story bulding and not expect broken bones. a a man cannot be caught in a "burn over"  and see the fire of Satan, earlier than he had put in His diary 😉  I am getting it back..

But apart from that we are expecting early morning showers in the Midlands and perhaps slight frosts up North..

😉  M

@tensecondsdown

I looked at the article you referenced and the parts list with it. I have made bespoke PCBs for my own purposes before and in my opinion you would be FAR better off to buy some inexpensive FR4 PCBs and add the components and solder it together with hookup wire.

There's only about 9 paths to solder and you're going to have to adjust the placement of the parts to accommodate possible component changes (the article appears to be from 2006).

Personally, I feel that it's not worth the effort nor cost nor time delay of making a custom PCB for this project when it would be so easy to just use some solder and wire.

Anything seems possible when you don't know what you're talking about.

@tensecondsdown You might also consider one of the following solderable bread boards

https://amz.run/6UdG or https://amz.run/6UdH there are smaller and maybe larger versions as well.

@tensecondsdown

zander's suggestion about the solderable bread boards is what I would consider a very good way to go.  There aren't a lot of connections between the components on your board, so it does seem to be the most economical route to take.  You could even shift all the components toward one end of the board and then cut the board more to the size you need.  Maybe you could even get two finished boards from one of the bread boards depending on component size and placement.

Give it a look see and let us know what you think.

And yes we do have a few members that seem to stray from the real topic at hand and wade into mostly philosophical discussions that have no bearing whatsoever to your topic.
