I am in the planning phase for building a solar powered camera for my wife’s rabbit enclosures so she can check up on them from her phone.  I am looking for any advice/guidance on how to proceed.

Physical environment:

  • Three enclosures and each is 10’ x 10’
  • Rabbit enclosures are approximately 175 feet from the house (clear path, no trees)
  • Existing enclosures are mostly weather proof (except at the bottom of the walls)
  • There is electricity available nearby (I’d like to try solar for this project)

Here’s what I have on hand:

  • Raspberry Pi camera module (5-megapixel with night vision)
  • Waveshare Mini Solar Panel (6V 5W)
  • Waveshre Solar Power Management Module
  • HiLetgo ESP-WROOM-32 ESP32 Development board
  • HiLetgo ESP32 OLED Wi-Fi Kit ESP-32
  • Arduino MEGA
  • Arduino UNO
  • 14500 Rechargeable Li-ion battery
  • Raspberry Pi 4
  • Raspberry Pi 3B+
  • Jetson Nano 2GB Developer Kit

Preferred approach:

  • Solution connected to the Wi-Fi
  • Wife able to use iPhone to view cameras

I am pretty new to Arduino so I don’t have a lot of experience to fall back on.  I have some questions:

  1. Is this project achievable?
  2. Is 175 feet too far to connect an Arduino to the Wi-Fi?
  3. What is the best mix of Arduino hardware or would I be better off using the Pi or Jetson Nano?
  4. Is there an application for the iPhone that I can use to display the camera feeds?

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Happy New Year!
