Power Supply for Pyrography Burning Pen

Hello all,

First a huge thank you to Bill for the ATX /Bench power supply instructions PDF (exceptionally well done) just waiting for a few parts to come in and it will be done. In my introduction I mentioned that I want to make a power supply for a Pyrography Burning Pen similar to the RazerTip SK https://store.razertip.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=120VSK

Digging through all my power supplies I found a XP Power ECM100US12 out of an Aruba Switch, output 12V, 8.3A, 100W https://www.xppower.com/portals/0/pdfs/SF_ECM40-100.pdf

I’m hoping to be able to use this little power supply, but I need help on what to do to reduce the voltage down to about 3 volts and maintaining the amperage at the 8.3 amps variable of course. I do have many other power supplies as well wall warts up to 19V, 8A, 150 Watts if there is another solution.                                                    

Any help, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Wayne, you're talking about nasty mean high currents there...I'm not used to that (I imagine 100W reduced from 12V to 3V would give >25A, depending on converter efficiency)

There are some interesting links to products/videos/articles when I google "high current dc dc converter", including some from Texas Instruments about different types of high-power MOSFETs

I also have been trying to find/build a low volt hi current supply for laser diodes and hi power leds. Ive tried a couple of motor controller that were more like current controllers but the voltage without a load on them stayed at supply levels. ( which was 24VDC) once the load is applied, the voltage would drop to the setting that was adjusted for. I didnt care for that initial 24V presence when the unit was turned on... Im still looking for a current controller for my laser diodes and now TECs too. Laser diode supplies are beyond my budget at the moment and I wouldnt learn anything if I bought one  😉

Yaknow, when I saw the word "pyrography" my mind started imagining sparks flying

And then I googled it, and realized that you probably had no need for this...
