About Me

Tim McCarthy, a retired software engineer living in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.

Born in New York, I have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering but have spent the majority of my career writing software. Started working in 1983 at Wang Laboratories in Lowell, MA. Worked in the diagnostic engineering group writing manufacturing diagnostic test software for the various motherboards and peripherals of Wang computers, mainly for the Wang personal computer. Wrote automation software for burning EEPROM chips, burn-in tests for PC motherboards. In '87 joined Lotus Development Corp, writing diagnostic software for memory chips and device drivers and went on to write UI code for Lotus 1-2-3, 3.0. Went from there to working on communication, database, and HVAC estimation software. In the last 10 years I worked at Booz Allen Hamilton as subcontractor for the IRS a project lead for the fraud detection system. My language of choice is C++ and I work on a laptop running Windows 11.

I'm a wannabe toymaker and have a life-long casual interest in robotics. I dabble in paper card modeling, reading history, and love listening to audiobooks. Like many others, I got here because I wanted to rekindle my interest in robotics and relearn all the electronics I've forgotten and reacquaint myself with the hardware. I'm an advocate for quality and testing. I hold strong opinions, but age has mellowed me enough so that now I'm mostly long winded. I hope that others here will help me relearn my way around a circuit and play around on my desktop workshop.
