Using Serial bus servos to replace a DC wheel motor

Is anyone familiar with using a serial bus servo like the Feetech STS3215 for driving wheels? This particular servo has decent torque and precision encoder that makes it attractive to replace a DC motor. I realize that it does require a controller and it does cost a few dollars more than a DC motor but it does reduce the number of wires needed for a motor that has an external encoder.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Mark

No, but I did one of the conversions on a regular servo to make it free wheel.  But this sounds like a great idea, I'll certainly have to get some to try out.

Thanks,

I haven't found too much in the way of wheels to fit a servo spline. There are a few wheels that install directly on a servo spline, some can use a flange disk fitting and there were some 25T spline to 4/5/6mm D-shaft adapters.

@markb,

One of the best excuses for a 3D printer - I CAD and 3D print my own.  200 mm diameter, about $1.50 in plastic.  These for a stepper motor.  Small ABS wheels with TPU tires are about $0.25.
