Hi,

My name is Rob and my id/handle is ThePeoplesFriend. Please accept my apologies for issuing my first Post (on UWB and LPS) before introducing myself.

I live on the wild but beautiful southwest coast of Wales, nothing but the sea between us and North America.

I retired in 2013 after 12 years in Networking and IP Videoconferencing working for the UK Joint Academic Network (JANET). In 2011 I was seconded to the UK Government, responsible for advising the counties of southern England in their development of their Rural Broadband strategies. In 2001 I specified and delivered the first National Network for Wales, which was the first Public Sector Network in the UK. Previously I worked in Network Multimedia, Computer Graphics and before that as a Geotechnical Engineer. I have also taught a number of subjects from Microelectronics to Surveying, Structural Engineering, computer graphics and Web development.

My education background is in Civil Engineering, Rock Mechanics and Numerical Methods in Engineering, including a PHD in Geophysics. I have undertaken Research in Computer Aided Design of Buildings (1973) and Plate Tectonics (1980), and developed a solid modelling programme for Finite Element Analysis post-processing in 1982.

My hobbies have ranged from Caving (Speleology) to Hang Gliding (Instructor), Skiing, Luge (GB Team) and of course practical microelectronics and programming.

My current interest is the construction and automation of my Garden Railway, which I started building in 2016. I have been spent some time on an MQTT solution for remotely switching points from my phone, but not found the time to deploy it!

I have been subscribed to the DroneBot Workshop for some years, and really appreciate the quality of the content, which is well researched, thorough and professionally presented.

I look forward to sharing and communicating with you all.

Cheers, Rob

Hi Rob and welcome to the forum.

Firstly let me say you are located in a beautiful part of our UK, we love Wales  north, south, east and west. We holidayed in Gwybert this summer and had a fantastic break.

Anyway, enough about that. You seem to have a rather unique profile and skills and experiences I have not yet seen on the forum so these will add an excellent contribution.

Also, there are many model railway members on the forum so you will feel at home here.

Looking forward to reading about your exploits.

Regards

Ron B (Stafford, UK)
