Hello Fellow Tinkerers,
My name is Jed and I am from NYC.
I was originally trained as a puppeteer, spent years on the road building and performing (adult puppetry, not kids).
Switched gears, got a computer degree and worked at numerous Internet companies. Mostly on the business and product side, I was/am a lousy coder.
Switched gears again and trained at a very traditional art school. Learned to draw and paint like a 17th Century Italian.
Recently I have been combing all three of my careers: paintings that have moving characters controlled by motors and microcontrollers. Happy to show them if anyone interested.
Looking forward to helping where I can and learning from the rest of you
Jed
Welcome to the forum, Jed! That's quite a diverse background you have.

I would be very interested in seeing that!

Oh yes! Please.
Assuming you have something acceptable to show here, I'd also love to see your work in puppetry; to get an idea of the medium and size.
Have you ever looked into card modeling? It might be right up your alley to put 3D painted models in motion.

Hi Jed, welcome! Your background is amazing and unique.
Combining puppetry, coding, and classical art sounds incredible.
For moving mechanical characters, understanding part design is key.
You might find this guide useful: The Design Principles of Mechanical Parts.
It covers basics that help with motors and linkages.
Would love to see your art-meets-robot projects!
Do you mainly use servos or stepper motors?
Thanks for all the nice replies. Apologies fo delay getting back to everyone.
Here are links to my first few moving paintings. These were mostly tests to see if I could get it all to work. They use a Raspberry Pi Pico, servo motor and PIR sensor. All the works are 8" x 8" inches, in ABS plastic and part of a gallery show currently up in Jersey City.
