Hello all,

I am a retired mechanical engineer who was involved in R&D.

Recently I got back into a spider robot project that I started 5 years ago.  It is working but could be better with some re-design but I am not sure if it it worth the time or to start from scratch.  For reference this was the starting point for me - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1009659.

I am looking at two directions, a lighter simpler 4 legged spider (or a hexapod); or a 4 legged dog / cat type.  Specifically looking for advice on best value servo / actuator, esp32 development boards, PS3 controller, and 3D  design /components.

I have an Ender 3 printer.  Also I fly RC planes and have tried quadcopters.

Any and all advice welcomed.

Quadruped is  Lighter, simpler, and with fewer servos, making it more cost-effective and easier to design. It’s less stable than a hexapod, but with proper programming, it can achieve impressive results.

Hexapod Offers better stability and more flexibility in movement but at the cost of complexity and weight.

Dog/Cat-Type Quadruped would allow for more complex movements and behaviours, such as trotting or bounding.

For 3D design, you can choose Fusion 360. For a better guideline on how to choose the right CAD software, you can see this article:
