@robert_s Welcome to the forum, I am guessing your name is Robert. I am Ron but my forum handle is @zander. I am a serious photographer (had a photo business for a couple years) but I 'lost my eye' quite a few years ago, but now slowly getting back into it. I used to have a big garden (50M x 25M) with a 7M by 13M greenhouse. I didn't have any electronics in the garden but am fairly familiar with what is possible today. Do NOT believe the nonsense about NPK sensors, they can't work. Only use capacitance based soil moisture, and still expect to replace it every few years or sooner.

If you need any guidance or just a friendly cyber friend to bounce an idea off of just give me a shout with @zander in the post.

@robert_s Hi Robert, and welcome. I too am about to embark on a greenhouse automation project, so I'd be happy to join you in your journey. I can't claim to be new to microcontrollers as I've playing about with them for a year or two now, but I can claim to be not very good at it yet. That was a pretty neat piece of kit that @zander  pointed you to, but as you suggest, it's quite an expensive way to get a temperature and moisture reading in one spot. Actually, mine is a polytunnel. It's not huge (8m * 3m) and one third of it is to be a concrete base for a seating area. I finally got round to putting the cover on it in late Summer last year. I should point out that it's only about fifteen metres from my back door so any automation I do is just for the sake of a project, rather than any  need to control stuff from afar. I'm new to under cover growing, so I've had millions of questions swirling around in my head about what I actually want to achieve with the automation. I'd be happy to share my thoughts if it would help, but I don't want to bore you (or anyone else) here, as you may be well ahead of me. I think ventilation and temperature control are my priorities to kick things off. Even in late Summer, it got very very hot, so I'm thinking automatic window opening and closing. This will probably be a long lasting project for me, so in the meantime, I'm just gonna have to walk that fifteen metres and open the bloody doors! I look forward to following your progress and stealing your ideas.
