I am a retired IT manager and I have recently been bitten by the Arduino/ESP32 bug. I spent years working with computers but never at the component level so a lot of this is new to me. Nonetheless, I'm having a lot of fun with it. There is a saying, "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." I went through that with my first 3D printer and now that I'm playing with Arduinos, everything looks like it needs one to control something.

Welcome to the forum.

With Arduinos and ESP32s and a 3D printer you'll be triply amused here.

Anything seems possible when you don't know what you're talking about.

@will I expect that I will! It's been a little frustrating at times, but I'm having fun. I'm hoping this forum will help a little on the frustration end. 🙂

I noticed your tagline. You will probably appreciate my favorite: Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment.

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum.

I, like you, was new to Arduino and all that, having also retired as Head of Technolgy. I also have many hammers and I'm not afraid to use them🤣.

Seriously, it's been a fascinating journey thus far and this forum is very helpful, with a great membership.

If you want to get into basic components and how these can be hooked up with Arduino, other mcus are available, then have a look at the Elegoo Most Complete Starter Kit for Uno/Mega. They provide a wide range of basic components together with the coded sketches. I presume you've downloaded the Arduino IDE?

In the mean time enjoy.

Hi Ron,

Yes, I got the starter kit and then lost interest in the simple projects that are amusing, but not all that useful. I always seem to dive into the deep end of the pool whenever I find a new interest and so there is a time when I don't know nearly enough to do what I have in mind. Mainly for me, it is sorting through the large number of variations for a particular part since, again, I don't know enough to make a clear distinction between them.

Yes, the IDE was one of the first orders of business. We are good friends now. 😀 I'm using v2 and like it over the original.

A side effect of all this is that it has provided a completely new subject area for conversations with my firmware engineer son. I think he has been somewhat surprised when his 75-year-old father uses terms like GPIO and debouncing etc.  Terms that are part of his everyday work life.
