I'm Mike from Canada. Some folks call me Biny due to my online user name (BinaryRhyme), which I started using for Karaoke (because when they call for Mike, 8 people stand up thinking its them...). Bill tells me that, at 61, I'm hardly the "elder gent" in the room here - which is fine. I'm sure I'll catch up. 😉

As a software architect I have, for years, insisted that "if it ain't virtual, it ain't real" but I've recently been kitting up to build some practical projects around the houses in the family, including automating a manual dumbwaiter, a detector probe to warn if the p-trap in a shower or sink has gone dry and is open to the sewer, and some shelf automation as part of a kitchen reno. Some are more electro, some are more mechanical - all are non virtual. 🙂

I'm also a of Jack of Arts (painting, music, photography, writing, yada yada) and, to cap it all off, have been studying Economics of late with an eye on the impact of automation to the workforce and standards of living.

Nice to be here - hope to be helpful at some point, and happy to be helped. Wave hi. I'm interested to hear what you're up to.

Mike/Biny

Hey Mike from Canada who is a software architect. I'm also Mike from Canada who is a software architect! I'm messing around with some basic electronics and simple projects like motion and temperature and parking sensors among other things. I want to hook them up to a home automation system at some point, when I finally settle on a system.

@yurkshirelad Heh, what are the odds? ... and, riffing off your username, I'm assuming you originally hail from Yorkshire. Nice. My spouse is a Brummie. 🙂

I'm eyeing home automation down the road as well - first up will be a replacement of my street address sign that incorporates LED lighting and a video gazer thingy, that will run off the 12V AC being fed to the doorbell (although I may just run POE instead).

I have a Synology NAS, which can run surveillance software (I am loathe to pay a monthly fee and ship all my house stuff into a cloud) - so the initial idea will be to use the NAS as a security hub - although the NAS may need to be cloned if the load gets too rich.

I will follow your progress with great interest. 🙂

Aye, that's where I grew up!

I wouldn't follow my progress with too much interest, as "progress" doesn't really seem to be my middle name! I tend to get distracted with other projects like a kid at Christmas. 😀
