I have an old flame there.  I promised her I'd sail into Oslo in a sailboat I designed and built.  Might still happen. 😎

Go for it..you only live once you know!...lol

We just experienced a sort of funny situation in our home where a friend contacted us asking if we were OK. Seems my wife called her, even left a VM........

@zander, @inst-tech - I was entering the Twilight Zone with that first paragraph.  I was thinking about bringing up the price of beans in China.  And I nearly choked to death on my Iced Tea when the punch-line arrived in the second! 🤣

Notes to self:

  1. Take a hard-hat.
  2. Take an old compass (no batteries)
  3. Learn and take a sextant.
  4. When Ron and I get knocked off the boat and are on a deserted island, make sure one of us has a pencil and razor blade so he can radio for help.

A windjammer cruise DOES sound like something I would enjoy if my assumptions about it are correct, so I am off to google that.

It's a shame, but when the founding/owner passed, his children broke the company and sold it off in pieces.  There are some cruise lines that still use sailing ships, but they don't quite have the same clientele.  Everything was manual and still used the old wooden blocks (pulleys) and lines were hauled by humans, often passengers.  The passengers were young, but no children and attire was optional.  I sailed on the Polynesia out of St. Martin...

and the Yankee Clipper out of Grenada

I also enjoyed the standard large modern cruise ships, but it was a totally different mindset... Tuxes, seven course meals, ballroom and dance club dancing, having a cigar in the your smoking jacket with a brandy... a little more high-brow.  Attire - formal.

Indeed, My favorite was the Viking cruise on the Rhine, Main, and Danube river from Budapest to Amsterdam..In sight of land at all times for 15 day, and beautiful scenery ...lol

I've never done one of the river cruises, but I've heard great things.  More in your neck of the woods... have you looked into the resurgence of the steamboat, paddle-wheel cruises?

I think it would depend on whether I out-live my wife... otherwise, I wouldn't.  🤣

@alex3105 - If we haven't totally freaked you out... we sometimes actually answer questions.  You might need a butterfly net to round us up or a base-ball bat to focus us... but we'll get there eventually.

Share pictures, or anything you care to about your projects... they sound great!

VBR,

@inq.. what superb humor you have!... lol

If you don't happen to have a razor blade, then perhaps could be an alternative  solution to that dilemma of being stranded on a desert Island..

An excerpt from the following link: https://www.instructables.com/How-to:-Make-a-simple-Crystal-Radio/

"I know there is many on this topic but this is slightly different. Instead of using magnet wire, gelana, iron pyrite, germanium diodes, I have used a rusty knife blade (A craft knife with the snap of blades) and a pencil lead as a detector, a crystal Earphone as an earphone, Solid Cat 6 wire as the winding wire for the coil, hookup wire as an aerial and earth. Hope this shows you that you really can use anything to make this work. Im sorry for the lack of pictures in constitutions (I'm doing this in retrospective to start with) "

Only problem is you can only receive, but not transmit...so you can listen to hem tying to find you, but can't contact them to tell them where you are!...lol

conclusion: don't fall overboard.. and get stranded on a desert island..lol

LouisR

Yes, we've considered the steamboat, paddle-wheel cruises..but because of all the travel restrictions caused by covid.. we haven't traveled much the past couple of years..We'll just wait and see how it all the works out, and if we have a complete regime change in the U.S. House and Senate come November..

I remember fondly my father and I making one when I was about five years old.  I remember winding the tube and him teaching me about the crystal and I remember the antenna going out my window and attached to a tree a long ways off.  If you ever happen to run across any links to those other versions with a rusty blade, I'd sure like to see those.

Don't go to any trouble though.  It's not like I plan to get knocked off a boat any time soon.  😉

LOL.... no, it's been a very long time since I built a "Cat Whisker" crystal radio .. back when i was a boy scout I think.. that would be in the mid to late 1950's...hehehe.

But if I should run into another one of those rusty knife blade types, I'll be sure to let you know...lol

@valerio I do not apply microelectronics first hand to the rocketry. But the whole Guidance, Navigation and Control area of rocketry has to deal with similar computing challenges and setups as the other stuff I do with microelectronics. So that is a field I wanna get into deeper. Only things I can directly apply on my very subsystem on the rocket would be design of a power supply for linear actuators and vehicle dynamics also regarding these actuators, but mostly software wise.

Hey guys,
I don't know how the forum notification system works, so I hope y'all get pingedwithout me tagging everyone. I really enjoyed reading all your posts and the topic it drifted to is just the right one. Another hobby of mine is sailing on a tall ship ^^. I am a member of the 'permanent' crew onboard as an ordinary seamen. Means I learned some advanced skills, had an exam, had a martime safety workshop and am now in the position to teach sailing and life onboard to the newbies. The ship is called 'Alexander von Humboldt II' and is very distingt with its green sails. I'll add a pic here:

I sail the 7 seas using my brutal force and sail the local lakes using my engineering superpower (soon hopefully) ^^

Looking forward to further exchange and I'll keep you updated about my projects.

Best regards
Alex

WOW! That is really cool that you have access and can do that?  Do I have to know German to join the crew?  😎

@zander thanks for the explanation

@inq thanks for adding the picture I have forgotten to link. The crew is often also international even when mainly german. Especially the permanent crew knows english very well. Sometimes a whole watch is set to be the international one and english is used as the primary language in that watch then. Depends on the location of the trip wether many internationals are aboard or not.
And I have forgotten to ask, but what does AE stand for in one of your first posts?
