Hi, to say I am an extreme newbie to this world would be an understatement, so I hope I don't sound too ignorant or I am wasting your time.
I am an avid outdoorsman. For years I have wanted to have an electronic device I can set up in the middle of my campsite that scans the surrounding area and alerts me if something is approaching the camp. If I could monitor the animals progress on a tablet even better, so I can record it and monitor it from my tent. What do you guys suggest for this? Thanks for the help.

...may not offer the kind of distance you require (out in themz woods :-)), but it will definitely help you with how to approach it from a logic and programming perspective. You may want to replace the ultrasonic sensor with something more appropriate for your needs (for example, a LIDAR).
Bill also has a video on ultrasonic sensors here:

...and likewise a video on how to use LIDAR here:

Cheers!
