@schober The most common esp32cam is an AI-THINKER. I don't think any of mine are labelled as such cuz they are clones. We know it's an AI-THINKER because of it's very inconvenient board layout. The first pic is an AI-THINKER side 1, the next is side 2. Pic 3 is an attempt to show both sides. Pic 4 is the MB board that allows you to use the board in a more or less normal manner. Pic 5 shows the MB attached to the esp32cam.

@zander very interesting story. Didn't know that. This happened in Chalk River? Carter was the captain of a nuclear submarine, wasn't he? Then he must have known something about nuclear reactors. - I had sabbatical years in Argonne Nat. Lab., Ill, and in Oak Ridge, TN.

@schober Carter, a U.S. Navy lieutenant who was working on a nuclear submarine project in Schenectady, N.Y., at the time, was called upon to head north.

@zander that's the way my old device looked like. Tomorrow I'll get the new one. I hope that the lens will not be covered with a red foil

@schober Ok, then the reason you had trouble is you picked the wrong board. Here is what you should pick for the AI-THINKER . Leave the Tools menu settings as they are. Send me a link to what you just bought but if it's Amazon use a URL shortener or enclose in ""

Might want to review Bill tutorial on using the ESP CAM here on the Dronebot Workshop.  I have a few ESP CAMs and have been successful in loading the rather complex camera sketch to them with the Arduino IDE.  I chose the AI Thinker choice for the board type even though my boards are not genuine AI Thinker boards.  I use the programming board as shown above since the ESP CAM boards do not have a USB connector for power/programming.  While the sketch is being compiled, I push and hold the Boot button on the programming board.  I then push and release the EN (reset) button on the programming board and then release the boot button  This informs the ESP that I want to download new code.  The new code should then be downloaded to the board.  If you are only going to use camera and SD card functions, the programming board can remain and be used to power the board.  If a GPIO pin is going to be used for Input or Output, the programming board will need to be removed.  Power and ground must be supplied to the appropriate pins.  The GPIO pins are then exposed for your input/output devices.
