Choosing the Right Drone Parts for DIY Builds

When building drones, I often struggle between buying imported components or going for in-house engineered parts. In my experience, the latter feels more reliable and beginner-friendly. What do you all prefer; mixing and matching from different sources, or sticking to parts designed and tested by a single team?

in-house wins (most times). But with exceptions. I had to buy WPI469 from overseas seller one time simply because I was super busy.

Man, I feel this hard—tossed up between imported bits and in-house parts all the time for DIY builds, too. For stuff like motors or ESCs, mixing and matching works fine, but there’s one part I’ve learned not to skimp on: lithium-ion power connectors. They’re easy to overlook, but mess ’em up and it’s a total disaster.
Last month I helped a buddy throw together a high-C-rate FPV drone—he grabbed a cheap generic connector (way weaker than a PXT60) for his 6S LiPo, and mid-race the contacts got so hot they melted the plastic, frying his main ESC. Another time, an ag drone builder used a non-vibration-rated connector for a heavy-lift rig; it shook loose mid-spray, dropping power for 2 seconds and ruining the crop pattern.
I’ve been using the PXT series connectors lately, and they’re solid—like PXT60 handles those massive peak currents from high-C-rate batteries (perfect for standard FPV builds), and PXT90’s got crown-spring contacts that stay locked even with heavy vibration (ideal for ag/industrial drones). They’re tailored to different drone setups, so you skip those avoidable messes.
