@yurkshirelad The install just asks to replace or keep both, I just replace since the install only takes a minute. Yes, the start up is still slow but the compile times are getting much faster and for me the key feature of being able to collapse sections of code is invcaluable but still not as good as I am used to.

I never use the installer, for the simple fact I download and try new versions often.  I always download the portable version for Windows, just delete the old directory and extract the new one to the same location.  Same for Linux, I simply download the AppImage version of it, so all you need to do is make it executable and run it, then it will create your sketch folder in your home directory etc... upon first run, I then simply delete and repeat for a new version.

@frogandtoad The normal install for Mac is similar, no drama, takes a couple seconds. If I choose to keep the old it is just renamed so a backout is simply a rename. Load times are still much slower than the old 1.8.19 however. Being a former long time windows user I at first was surprised that the Mac has no uninstall function like Windows does. I use a 3rd party uninstaller.

rc7 takes forever to load for me, and often never actually loads until I interact with the window in some way. Otherwise the splash image stays there forever, hiding any window I bring to the foreground. rc6 had this problem and they said they'd fixed it in rc7.

Did you uninstall rc6 before installing rc7?

rc7 has resolved that slow load up time for me, on both my Linux (KDE Neon & Mint) and Windows 7 machines.

Which O/S are you using out of interest?

Windows 10.

Ok, thanks for letting me know.

Btw... I also use the latest nightly build of the non pro version (1.8.20), and the startup times of that and rc7 is virtually the same.

Unfortunately I don't have a Windows 10 machine to test it out on my end... maybe someone else here can enlighten us on their experiences under Windows 10?

@frogandtoad I am going to grab the latest nightly and then time both that and 1.8.19 startup time. I think it might be very close now.

@frogandtoad I just downloaded the nightly build and happy to see the missing boards and libraries issue is fixed. Load times are getting better, but on my M1 1stgen Mac Air it's 16.75 for V1 and 24.81 for V2 latest build. Both timed with phone stopwatch app so error could be 1 sec on start and stop but in any case V2 still has a way to go. It would be for more interesting to do a compile test but that is a little tricky due to pre-building etc. I suspect if I do 2 in a row on the same sketch and only time the second that would be indicative. Here are the results.

Ver 1 test 1 1:06

Ver 1 test 2 0:30

Ver 2 test 1 1:10 even though the screen was rolling past many messages for a while

Ver 2 test 2 0:21

Result is very similar, no clear winner.

Good to hear... sounds like they're making progress, albeit slowly.

@frogandtoad They are getting there for sure.. I like the exclusion ability but a more general approach is even better, just overtyping the line numbers with a single X or ANY  block with XX ... XX is even more useful. Unfortunately my list of don't likes is longer.

Both Board and Library manager panels would be better with pop-up panels like ver 1.

The file selector is Ok but so is the standard API supplied file navigator.

I would prefer some control over all the pop-ups when mousing over code. Some folks like me and I suspect most on the forum are writing tiny to small sketches mostly single file and can most of the time remember the syntax of both their own and system/library functions. I want that but it would be even better if I could configure a time parameter for how quickly the pop-ups appear. I see the need for 3 of them, one for my own code, one for library code, and one for API/system code.

NO, I am not going to post a feature request, they need to finish first then we can start to bother them with new features.

Sorry, but I'm lost... what exactly do you mean here? overtyping, block, etc...?

I have to disagree here... I like the implementation of the new version

Not at all, the new version allows you to see all your sketches and directories in a single view - The old version is way lacking in this area

Such preferences may or may not be available in the final version, but they are not deal breakers, imo.

Haha, no worries... they have enough enhancement requests already (in their issues tracker), and I'm sure your requests are presented for future implementations 😉

Cheers
