@zander , Thank you very much for taking the time to further trouble your mind into the problem and for your answer. You have given me food for thought and some great leads I can follow . I will make the checking and will return any results.
About the level shifter, I am thinking of also trying to detect a 3v3 I2C device ( replacing the esp12e) like a LCD screen to see if the arduino can detect that.
I am using the NODE MCU 1.0(ESP-12E Module) from ESP8266 Boards(3.0.2) in Boards Manager.
